Udaipur in the Monsoon:
Udaipur feels different when the rains arrive. The summer heat gives way to cooler air, the Aravalli Hills turn greener, and the lakes slowly begin to fill again. For visitors, monsoon brings a quieter and more refreshing side of the City of Lakes — one that you may not experience during the busy winter season.
July to September is considered the rainy season, but for me, the real charm of the season comes later in the monsoon, when the landscape around Udaipur has turned greener, and the city begins to look freshly washed. This is the time when tourists can truly enjoy Udaipur in a different way. When the dust of the past few months is washed away from the walls of the old havelis and palaces, the marble carvings and old architecture look fresh and beautiful. The whole city gets a new glow that is hard to describe in words.
What Does Monsoon Feel Like in Udaipur
Rain does not come to Udaipur in one continuous spell. In my experience, there is often a good shower, and then it stops. That is actually the best time to go out and visit your favourite tourist spot. And if you happen to be at the right place when it rains, getting a little wet has its own kind of pleasure.
The Lifeline of the City
The real excitement of the monsoon in Udaipur is watching its lakes fill. Water flowing in from the surrounding catchment areas slowly raises their level, and when a lake finally begins to overflow, it feels like the season has done its job.
For us Udaipur people, that is what we hope for every monsoon — to see our lakes full again.
Where to Stay in Udaipur During the Monsoon
There are also many options for staying in Udaipur during the monsoon, You can choose a lake-facing hotel, stay in an old heritage property, or experience one of the havelis in the old part of Udaipur. But if your main purpose is to slow down and relax, I would personally choose a farm stay outside the city.
Why Choose a Farm Stay Outside the City?
A farm stay feels different in the monsoon. The rain-washes the dust from the trees, the hills turn greener, and the smell of wet soil fills the air. Instead of watching the rain from a hotel window, you are surrounded by it.
Leave the city’s crowds behind and sit at a farmhouse, watching the rain while enjoying a cup of hot tea. Have lunch or dinner made with fresh vegetables from the farm and enjoy the famous farm-to-table experience.
Some farm stays are also close to the hills, where you may get to see small waterfalls flowing after the rains. It is a feeling that you simply cannot experience in the city.

Best Places to Visit in Udaipur During the Monsoon
Now let me tell you about the tourist spots that become even more enjoyable during the monsoon. Of course, these are great places in every season, but the rain brings something different to them.
Start with Lake Pichola and the City Palace. When the sky is cloudy and the surrounding hills turn green, the lake and the old palace buildings take on a completely different character.
I have already written an article about the Monsoon Palace, mainly about watching the sunset from there. But when the monsoon clouds gather around the hills and you go up above them, there is hardly any other place in Udaipur that can match that experience.
And yes, if the weather clears in the evening, you can enjoy the sunset too.
How to Stay Safe and Enjoy Udaipur during Peak Monsoon
Rain can make roads, especially hilly roads, slippery, and weather can change quickly. Check the local weather before heading to hilltop attractions, carry an umbrella or light rain jacket, and allow extra travel time when it is raining heavily.
